Pho Today – Restaurant Review in South Plainfield, NJ

Pho Today Update:

  • We got takeout from Pho Today during the pandemic, and it is still delicious. If you order pho, the noodles and broth are packaged separately so you won’t have soggy noodles. 🙂
  • They take the virus seriously with takeout orders located on a long table in the foyer.

When Pho Today opened up off of Route 287, we were skeptical. Multiple restaurants and bars have occupied that location for the past decade. But as if the place itself is haunted by previous failed businesses, new ones are always doomed and brought to their inevitable end.

Despite our skepticism, we waited a month for Pho Today to work out their kinks and gave it a try. To our surprise, the restaurant was packed. Not only did we have trouble finding a parking spot, we had to wait for a seat. They had a full bar area, which has recently turned into a banquet room. Walls were decorated with intricately placed wine bottles, no doubt, remnants of the businesses that came before.

Bun Bo Hue from Pho Today in Plainfield NJ

The menu has everything to soothe your Vietnamese cuisine craving. Luis chose a grilled beef with thin vermicelli noodles, and I opted for bun bo hue, a spicy beef noodle soup. Both did not disappoint.

Luis’s dish was phenomenal. You could taste a slight char on the lemongrass beef that’s grilled just right. The thin vermicelli noodles were packed in tiny squares so you could easily wrap together all the pieces of the dish for a perfect bite. It’s a variation of the typical bun bo xao, which is a grilled beef bowl with broth-less vermicelli noodles and greens.

My bun bo hue was the BEST I’ve ever had. The flavors of the lemongrass, beef broth, and spices were so complex, and although the soup came out blood red, it was just the right amount of heat. There is a good variety of meats too, which was a nice touch, since I can get bored easily.

And of course a Vietnamese restaurant isn’t complete without trying their pho. Piping hot soup, with a depth of flavors is what we experienced. Check out the color of the soup! This is the stuff of gods should you ever need to cure an upset stomach or cold.

Never again will we have to put up with watered down broth. Now, whenever we crave Vietnamese food, this restaurant is our go-to. And, we’re pretty sure the location is no longer haunted, as Pho Today is here to stay.

Pro Tips:

  • If you ever want a cheap drink, they have glasses of wine for only a few dollars. 🙂
  • They have multiple locations, so you don’t need to travel to South Plainfield to try them out!
