Restaurant Review: Arturo’s of Maplewood, NJ

Some people are happy with plain pizza from a food court. Me? I’m all about that farm-to-table, artisanal pizza. You may already think that any carby goodness slathered in cheese sounds delicious, but you haven’t tried an elevated pizzeria like Arturo’s in Maplewood, NJ.

When we first moved to our new house, Arturo’s was one of the first local eateries we tried. We knew they were going to be at least decent with 700+ positive reviews on Yelp and close to 900 on Google. They ended up blowing us away.

All of Arturo’s ingredients are seasonal provided by local farmers, and they make sure you can taste the difference in every bite. Whenever we go, we must get the Maple Bacon pizza. It’s a white pie with hand-made mozzarella cheese, heritage bacon, shaved onions, a splash of PA maple syrup, and parmigiano reggiano. It’s unlike any other pizza we’ve ever had. The savory and sweet is like the perfect dance of ying and yang in your mouth.

Since you’re carbo-loading already, you should also order a pasta. I’m partial towards anything with mushrooms or truffle, so we’ve tried their amazing Cinghiale and Mushroom Ravioli. Today, we had their Sausage Ragu which sounds simple but made a major statement when it landed on our table. It’s penne with a house-made fennel sausage ragu; baby approved.

If you plan to dine in, expect a wait during peak times since the place is tiny. During winter, their outdoor seating is covered with heat lamps which offers extra seating space. It’s also super kid friendly if that matters to you. It felt like a third of the folks there had babies or kids, including us. If you want to order for pickup, consider a day in advance. A few times we called in the afternoon and were told that they couldn’t accommodate anymore takeout orders.

Arturo’s is seriously amazing comfort food. Give it a go and let me know how you like it in the comments!
